Midtown Atlanta is doing more than its share to help Atlanta become a true 24-hour city. I've been a resident of Midtown Atlanta since the year 2000, and I can't imagine ever wanting to move away!
Piedmont Park is the geographical and cultural center of the neighborhood. With recent renovations to the turf, Lake Clara Meer, and the pier, it has become a place for all residents of the neighborhood to enjoy. Information on Piedmont Park.
New to Midtown Atlanta is Georgia Tech's Technology Square at spring and 5th streets, which officially opened in late October 2003. Interesting to walk around in, it represents Georgia Tech's official foray beyond the Downtown Connector (I-75/85), it promises to be a great incubator of future technology growth. Midtown is Atlanta's heart, right in the middle between Downtown and Buckhead. Taking care of this vital organ continues to yield positive results for the entire region. Today, Midtown is a cosmopolitan community with a healthy mix of offices and skyscrapers, great places to live, cultural destinations and green space, all enhancing and supporting each other. Construction cranes won't be leaving Midtown Atlanta anytime soon. Over the past several years Midtown has experienced residential growth of 250% and office has space has expanded by 60%.
In June alone, Piedmont Park hosts the Gay Pride Festival, which takes place in late June, and Screen on the Green, which is an incredible opportunity to watch a free movie in the park. People bring their blankets, wine, and munchies and catch a flick under the stars! You can find information on Gay Pride Festival.
Homes from grand to simple dotted the area. During the 1920s a host of small apartment buildings were built in the area to accommodate the new young professionals riding the street cars north from work at their downtown offices. Due to a housing shortage during World War II, many of the larger homes were subdivided and rented out as rooms.
The history of Midtown spans more than a century. In the 1870's, Peachtree Street was the most prestigious residential street in Atlanta, with the Governor's Mansion and other fine homes gracing it. Residents ventured further from downtown as streetcar lines were extended all the way out to Sixth Street and Piedmont Avenue and as The Gentlemen's Driving Club was established in 1887 (now the Piedmont Driving Club).
And if all that’s not enough, Atlanta maintains a wealth of additional charm for residents and visitors alike. Lovely neighborhoods, intriguing architecture, and a passionate regard for the Braves add character to the city and its suburbs, which shelter more than four million residents.
